Norfolk Wedding Photography Inspiration
I say to my clients I am here to help them as they plan their own wedding. Photography is usually a priority after venue and dress so I offer advice if I am asked regarding sourcing and planning within the industry itself. My website offers a directory of suppliers and venues across the regions that a mostly photograph. Although, I travel throughout the UK as a wedding photographer.
Wedding Photography Booking Tips From Experience
I am not a wedding planner but I can write a post (this post) about planning my own wedding in Yorkshire and vow renewals in Norfolk and the pitfalls of a wedding photography business to look out for when choosing your photographer because my wife and I (I love saying that and you will never get used to saying it) have experienced this first hand. My wedding photography business was established in Yorkshire since then I have photographed over 250 weddings throughout the UK. In the interest of this blog it is important to note Natalie and I married in 2011 in North Yorkshire. Natalie had just completed her degree at university and I was a wildlife and aircraft photography enthusiast at the time, second shooting for award winning wedding photographers developing my skills and experience whilst still working full time. I am not going to pretend at this stage and say I planned our wedding. I didn’t. I was in the middle of a major career change and was happy to yes as long as our wedding stayed within budget.
Budget, now here’s my tip from the first mistake we made in Yorkshire when we planned our wedding. Budget at-least £1400 for your professional wedding photographer. No matter your total budget always have a similar figure (if not more if you can afford it) and as I am writing this blog in 2019 please allow for yearly increases within the industry. I say this from experience…it ends up being more costly (we had a vow renewals we later paid for) by budgeting less we were both unbelievably disappointed in the photography service we were provided our wedding photos were not one’s you would look upon and treasure. Ironic you would say I am sure. Which leads me into my next tip, If there is a photographer you know you want to book, don’t wait! In the interest of our budget (see first tip) we thought we would leave wedding photography with about 9 months to go in the hope we would be offered a discount by the photographer I knew and we actually wanted to book. But when it came round to enquiring, our risk did not pay off as he was unavailable. The biggest pitfall of a professional wedding photographer… key dates book quickly. Our photos did not even look like the samples we were shown in the studio we visited when we booked. When reviewing a photographer’s sample albums check to see if the sample you see actually showcases their work. Certain album companies can provide ‘stock’ wedding photos. A professional would never opt for this he or she would always use their latest work and if you are still unsure check out their blog and social media too. My final tip when booking your photographer before I get onto the good stuff…our Norfolk vow renewals! Always ask if the photographer you meet, who shows you their work will be the one to photograph on the day. Yes, you guessed it. The photographer Natalie and I went to see and who we booked and corresponded with, did not turn up to photograph our wedding day. Neither did he tell us not to expect him. The pitfall of booking a photography studio (larger business) rather than a individual wedding photographer I personally believe. When we later enquired, about it after receiving our photos it was in our contract that unless we requested a specific photographer and received written confirmation the studio could send another photographer. Always read the small print of your contract. I am not going to name the Yorkshire wedding photography business we booked but I can say they are no longer in business. I hope these top tips for booking your wedding photographer from my own experience help you as you begin to plan your own wedding.

East Anglia is a place very close to my heart. My interest in photography began with my obsession with aviation which lead me to Suffolk were I have spent uncountable hours at the air bases there taking photos. My other keen interest is in nature and the outdoors which consequently led me to discover Norfolk and all its beauty. Natalie has also fallen in love with East Anglia after visiting with me. We had always talked about renewing our wedding vows (after the above issues with our wedding photography) and following a health scare for Natalie we renewed our vows in October 2019 celebrating and staying with our closest family and friends at award winning Chaucer Barn and hosting our ceremony at the historic Cley Windmill on the North Norfolk coast.
Chaucer Barn, is a magical wedding venue located near to Holt and just 3 miles from Sherringham in the village of Gresham an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is an award-winning wedding venue and it is clear to see why! with 4 acres of immaculately landscaped grounds and a further 16 acres of parkland. Chaucer offers a relaxed, rustic and DIY vibe for your celebrations within an informal and tranquil setting. We both immediately fell in love. Everyone staying can make themselves at home. I must say our guests certainly did just that. There are 9 bedrooms with further accommodation in 5 self contained eco lodges hidden in the nearby woods. These are very luxurious and beautifully crafted and can hold up to four guests each and they are only a short walk from the barn. We arranged our venue show round, discussed our initial plans and booked. We only have fantastic praise for the venue, it’s location and the staff who work extremely hard on the up keep of this venue and it shows.
Chaucer is a licensed wedding venue with a host of locations to hold your ceremony, half moon wood, wild flower meadow or on the more formal lawns for up to 150 guests. If you are wanting, or the weather dictates an indoor ceremony Chaucer has a banqueting hall that can also hold up to 80 guests. However, we opted for an outdoor ceremony at Cley Windmill due to our personal attachment to the Norfolk coastline and Chaucer not being that far away. Yes, it was cool (breezy) but that is the Norfolk coast in October ha ha and we had provided blankets for everyone to snuggle into. Our ceremony was wonderful and it was fantastic to be outdoors in the elements while Pink Footed Geese flew overhead (the bird watcher still in me). We had heartfelt readings and a sand ceremony to encourage those closest to us to take part, all thoughtfully planned and executed by Sarah Baker Norfolk Bluebells celebrant whom we highly recommend. As guests enjoyed the warm hospitality that Cley Windmill had to offer. Natalie and myself visited the nearby Cley beach with James our chosen photographer and Chris videographer, both captured some amazing moments for us. Then it was all aboard our vintage bus back to Chaucer barn where our autumnal celebrations continued…
We planned our Norfolk renewals together with the importance of photography and videography taking centre stage. The images showcased on this post were captured by James Powell Photography and I hope they provide you with some inspiration as you plan your own Norfolk or Suffolk Wedding. Enjoy!
